L-400/D
L-400/D

The Daniel Technology model L-400/D is a specially adapted microcassette recorder with auto-reverse recording which allows up to three hours of continuous running. This product is an Olympus L-400 which has been enhanced with a unique protective shroud over the keyboard to prevent accidental change of operating mode (this is far more reliable than the keyboard lock switch). In addition certain alarms have been removed by disabling the loudspeaker. This is done for officer safety reasons. Remote control and microphone inputs are available on the side of the machine and are designed to operate with the types of accessory items normally used in law enforcement. All other functions of the machine remain in tact including the original built-in microphone and earphone output. It is particularly well suited to simple concealment such as inside a cigarette pack as well as more elaborate installation with an external microphone to provide optimum sound quality and security. The L-400/D is the most compact recorder currently available for investigative use.

This product is manufactured and distributed exclusively by Daniel Technology, Inc. Optional accessory items are the EM-8/RA microphone, NLS-2/RA remote control, LS-1/RA latching remote control, and TP-3 telephone pick-up. The Pelican P-1120 case is suitable for storage and transportation.

DM-DC
DM-DC

The Daniel Technology duplicator is a modular system which provides for efficient, safe copying to standard cassette format original evidence tapes from Micro-Cassettes, stereo Sony NT-2 and MZ-N1 digital recorders, Nagra SNST and JBR. Because the original recordings are often longer than the tape being copied onto, the system provides for automatic, unattended operation without the need to program the system for the length of the original or copy. The T-202/DC is a special proprietary version of the Tascam 202MkIII recorder. It is a two speed dual well machine which will produce two simultaneous copies and provides all the necessary control circuits to automatically start and stop the source playback machine. The T-202/DC can also make additional copies from cassette-to-cassette at double speed.

Micro Copies

To copy from micro-cassettes made on the MAC-20 or L-400, use the model DM-DC system. Copies are made at double the original tape speed (switch selectable). To copy from micro-cassette and NT-2, MZ-N1, or Nagra, select the DM-DC micro system and add the MZC9, NTC, PSC, NDC or NEC cables.

Sony MZ-N1 Mini-Disc Copies

To copy from a Sony MZ-N1, an MZC9 cable is supplied with the DM-MZ. This will make either one or two first copies and can also make additional copies from cassette-to-cassette at double speed. It will work with either a standard recorder or the Daniel Technology enhanced MZ-N1/D recorder.

Sony NT-2 Micro-Digital Copies

To copy from a Sony NT-2, an NTC cable is supplied with DM-NT. This will make either one or two first copies and can also make additional copies from cassette-to-cassette at double speed. It will work with either a standard recorder or Daniel Technology enhanced NT-2/D.

Nagra Copies

To copy from the Nagra SNST to standard cassette using an expander, use any system above with an NDC or NEC cable. The selection of cable is determined by whether a Nagra DSP or Daniel Technology EX-5 is used. Nagra JBR tapes can be copied by connecting the duplicator with PSC cable to the PS-1 playback machine.

Marantz Modification
Marantz

The Daniel Technology model MRC/SS circuit provides three functions in one package. First, an efficient (low power drain) remote control allows the recorders to be started and stopped by computer logic, relay contacts, or a simple switch. In remote control stand-by the MRC/SS draws about 150 µAmps, less power than the self-discharge of most batteries (about ten years) and in operation imposes a burden of less than one percent of normal battery life. A standard Marantz PMD-201 in remote stand-by will drain a fresh set of batteries in less than one day and a PMD-430 has no remote control facility at all.

The second function is a "Silent Stop" at the end of tape. A standard Marantz recorder has a solenoid which makes noise when it disengages the "Play" and "Record" keys at the end of a tape. In the event that the recorder is located near the subject of an investigation this noise could be heard. The MRC/SS not only disables the solenoid but also provides electronic shut-off to minimize power consumption and strain on the recorder and tape.

Finally, the MRC/SS provides power to the type of electret microphones which are widely used by law enforcement agencies. It is especially useful with the Daniel Technology model LV-7 microphones when used in motor vehicles, aircraft, or boats. In the PMD-201 and PMD-221 a modified version of the standard input connector is used and can be operated with these electret microphones or an ordinary dynamic microphone. The PMD-430 stereo recorder has a five pin DIN connector which will allow electret power, both microphone inputs, and remote control to all be connected with a single plug. This is particularly useful when an installation is pre-wired and only a short time is available to connect a recorder with fresh tape and batteries.

Half-speed modification of the PMD-430. Daniel Technology, through careful circuit modification and calibration is able to alter the operating speed of the tape to 15/16 inches per second while maintaining high recording quality. In conjunction with the dbx™ noise reduction system in the PMD-430 this option allows up to two hours of continuous recording with sound quality comparable to many other recorders operating at standard speed. A concise label on the top of the machine advises users of the special speed and how to achieve optimum performance.

Telephone input modification of PMD-201. The standard PMD-201 has an RJ-11 modular telephone jack which causes the phone line to go "Off hook" when the recorder is turned on. It can also cause audio signals to playback into the line. These characteristics are designed for applications other than law enforcement. This input circuit is changed so that it does not cause the line to go "Off hook" or be loaded in any way. Any possibility of feedback into the line is totally eliminated. The input impedance is 5K Ohm AC and greater than 10M Ohm DC. While advanced counter-measures equipment may detect the recorder on the line, this circuit is suitable for all consensual recording as well as many non-consensual installations where simple types or no counter-measures are encountered.

SAP-11

The SAP-11 is a true professional quality auto-reversing stereo cassette recorder designed specifically for law enforcement use. In conjunction with the PMD430/H playback machine the complete system provides performance and functionality which has never been achieved previously in a half-speed cassette body recorder. One-touch record control is provided for operator convenience.

The voice intelligibility advantage of stereo is well known. The SAP-11 provides that advantage in a small streamlined package which is reliable, economical, and easy to use. Because standard cassettes and "AAA" batteries are used, this system is affordable to operate as well as to purchase. When your investigative work requires more than a music or dictating machine, the SAP-11 delivers high performance similar to other types of equipment costing four to eight times as much.

The SAP-11 can operate for up to four hours continuously with auto-reverse or two hours in a totally silent mode. The reversing mechanism is one of the quietest and fastest available and is further enhanced by an innovative fast tape-handling circuit. When used with special tapes offered by Daniel Technology the turn-around time from side "A" to "B" is less than five seconds, thereby minimizing any loss of information.

All controls are recessed to prevent accidental change of operating mode and connectors are of a military style, high reliability, locking design. The EM-8/MT microphones offered by Daniel Technology have a special suspension to minimize clothing noise and are exactly matched to the recorder so they produce exceptional speech clarity and will not overload the ALC circuit as many "high gain" mics do. Two types of remote control switches are offered. The NLS-2/MT is a conventional slide switch and the LS-1/MT is a latching push-button type which requires a key to turn off after having been activated. Both have completely silent operation after initial start in all operating modes.

SAP-11M

The SAP-11M is a special extra rugged companion to the original SAP-11 cassette recorder which is designed specifically for law enforcement use. It is functionally self-contained, providing both record and playback capability, but in conjunction with the PMD430/H playback machine the complete system provides even higher performance than the basic specifications of this long-play cassette body recorder. Ruggedness, reliability, and simplicity of operation are paramount in the design. The SAP-11M can operate for up to four hours continuously with auto-reverse or two hours in a totally silent mode.

The top and bottom housings of the SAP-11M have been reinforced to provide greater strength and stability in the most hostile operating conditions. All controls are a direct acting mechanical type for greatest reliability and are shrouded to prevent accidental change of operating mode. The connectors have been modified to provide a high reliability, locking mechanism. Operating instructions are printed on the back panel. The controls are clearly marked and so simple that most users do not even need the instruction manual. The EM-8/NT microphones offered by Daniel Technology have a special suspension to minimize clothing noise and are exactly matched to the recorder so they produce exceptional speech clarity and will not overload the ALC circuit as many "high gain" mics do. The microphone plug is a heavy-duty right angle type which mates to the locking system on the recorder. Two types of remote control switches are offered. The NLS-2/DR is a conventional slide switch and the LS-1/DR is a latching push-button type which requires a key to turn off after having been activated. Both have completely silent operation and have extremely low battery drain providing virtually unlimited standby.

T-122/D3W
T-122/D3W

The Daniel Technology model T-122/D3W is a specially adapted cassette recorder designed for audio enhancement laboratory use. It has wide range playback capabilities which allow the user to select a fixed speed at half, double, or standard cassette speed of 4.8 cm/sec. Variable speed playback can be selected instantly covering the entire range of -70% to +120% in one continuous sweep. By using a custom made reverse logarithmic taper control, the center position is standard speed and adjustment is very even and precise over the entire range. This is essential when recovering a tape which was recorded on a defective recorder which had rapid or widely varying speed.

In record mode the T-122/D3W is automatically locked at precisely the standard speed so that it is impossible to accidentally make an off-speed recording.
